Our Story

Who's behind SmartyGrants?

The system is being developed by Our Community through its best practice grants management division, the Australian Institute of Grants Management (AIGM).

Our Community is a world-leading social enterprise that provides advice, tools and training for Australia's 700,000 community groups and schools, and practical linkages between the community sector and the general public, business and government.

Our Community's national headquarters are based in Melbourne, employing over 30 staff supporting our membership base of over 55,000 groups and enterprises spanning all areas of the community sector as well as government, business and academia.

The Australian Institute of Grants Management is the best practice network for government and local government grants managers and grantmakers.

Through its ground-breaking Grants Management Quarterly (GMQ) publication, online resources available through a dedicated, dynamic website (www.grantsmanagement.com.au), an annual conference, and other training and peer support opportunities, the AIGM is working to help all Australian grantmakers review, improve and reform their grants programs, and keep abreast of what is happening within Australia and internationally.

The SmartyGrants development and innovations team is highly experienced in the grantmaking, grantseeking and technology arenas. We bring to the project a reputation for creating accessible, commonsense solutions to improve the interactions between community sector organisations and the government and corporate sectors, and the general public.

How was SmartyGrants designed?

Extensive consultation has taken place with respect to design and development including:

  • Environmental scan and scoping of concept with key grantmakers' networks, and other channels
  • Grantseeker feedback via Our Community's 55,000+ membership base
  • Focus group analysis involving targeted grants officers
  • Analysis of the annual Grants in Australia survey (more than 500 responses annually)
  • Concept testing through the AIGM's Best Practice in Grants Management Conference (involving 150+ delegates from across Australia)
  • Ongoing, long-term tracking of resources and best and next practices throughout Australia and world-wide through the AIGM's Grants Management Quarterly publication and website.
